The American Civil Liberties Union is suing the Hernando County School District over single-gender classes at Westside Elementary School.

The ACLU said the voluntary program, which currently serves 182 students, violates federal anti-discrimination laws.

According to our partners at the Tampa Bay Times, the ACLU argues same-gender classrooms are based on unproven educational theories and don't lead to significant improvements.

The district will vote in January on whether to continue the program.
