The first Bay area baby born in the year 2015 came into the world just seconds after the clock struck midnight.

Julia Betts, 20, gave birth to the first baby of the New Year, Myla Brennae Redd.

"I was actually due on the 21st of December so it just came out of nowhere," said Betts.

The baby girl had some competition for the title of first baby. Another baby was born at Tampa General Hospital, two minutes before midnight, and a third, 24 minutes after.

Julia and midwife Tammy Taylor realized minutes before the ball dropped her first child might also be the hospitals first in 2015.

"It was teamwork," said Betts.

“Didn't expect this one to be the New Year’s baby but I was so excited when I thought that we could do it, but I always defer to the mom," said Taylor. "I’ve had a lot of practice. So when she said she wanted to do the New Year’s, I was like ‘oh yeah!’”

Nearly 32 hours of labor was no problem for Betts who sells jerseys at Raymond James Stadium and worked through her pregnancy.

"It was a long time,” Betts said. “Felt like 9 months was three years."

But it was worth the wait for her baby girl who was born seven pounds and 13 ounces.

"She’ll probably think it's cool, too,” said Betts. “I definitely keep newspaper clippings and stuff for her."

Being the first baby of the year comes with some perks. Tampa General gave the baby an embroidered blanket and hat, a gift bag, and a flower arrangement.
