A Bay area county just got a nice chunk of change to help make their roads safer.

A lot of roads in Hernando County are perfect for a nice, relaxing Sunday drive. But some of the same roads are also dangerous and even deadly.

Kenny Godfrey lives off Citrus Way right near a notorious curve.

"I've seen so many people crash their cars," Godfrey said. "Turn over in the woods."

County transportation leaders also know the curve well, and are working to make it safer.

"If it were yesterday it wouldn't be soon enough," Godfrey said.

Hernando leaders just received nearly $500,000 of state money to improve dangerous curves on 10 rural roads. The plan is to add things like warning signs, pavement markers and more.

Rachel Clark likes the sound of that.

"People go off the road or get in accidents," Clark said.

The 10 roads were picked partly because they have a fatal and injury crash rate that's above the statewide average for two-lane roads. Some of the roads that made the list include Citrus Way, Fort Dade Avenue, Sunshine Grove Road, Croom Road and Powell Road.

County transportation leaders say the work will being going on for the next few months.
