Music is a big part of life for Everyday Heroes Marilyn and Ralph Harper.

Their group, Old Time Music, is a regular visitor to Bay area retirement and nursing homes.

And, as 83-year-old Ralph explained, there’s only one spring chicken in the group of eight.

“This whole band is over 80 years old except for one,” Ralph said. “Our ‘kid’ is only 77.”

Marilyn said playing for others brings her joy that’s hard to put into words.

“It’s gratifying because I know that they enjoy what I give them and I know they enjoy what we do for them,” Marilyn said.

The group has been performing since the 1980s. Old Time Music does at least one show a week, plus rehearsals. The musicians always play for free.

Marilyn has one other love, though. The 81-year-old has been knitting since she was a child. In her spare time, she knits shawls and cowls to hand out. The cowls go to the Seamen’s Church Institute.
