The University of South Florida’s proposed medical school in downtown Tampa is now facing delays.

The medical school faced a crucial vote Wednesday, and it came up short in means of funding.

According to partner newspaper the Tampa Bay Times, during Wednesday's meeting, the Board of Governors said they needed more information before they could approve any more funding. The board said they expected a presentation from USF.

One of the Committee’s Chairman took full responsibility for the mix up over the presentation expectations, and USF President, Judy Genshaft, assured the board they would provide them with whatever information they needed to secure the funding.

It was back in October that USF, along with Tampa Bay Lightning owner, Jeff Vinik, announced the plans for the new medical school in downtown Tampa.  Vinik is donating the land for the new 12-story campus, and it’s all part of his $1 billion redevelopment plan for the Channelside area of downtown Tampa.

The University of South Florida must secure close to $157 million for the project, with about $62 million coming from the State.

The Times is reporting that the Board of Governor’s is giving USF until the next meeting on February 19 to come up with whatever plans and studies the Board wants to see.
