A teenager was arrested Wednesday after Clearwater police said he stole a car with a sleeping child inside.

The 16-year-old male suspect was taken into custody and charged with grand theft auto. He was taken to the Juvenile Assessment Center.

Detectives said the teenager told them he was not aware the 6-year-old boy was asleep in the back of the car when he took it.

The car was stolen from the King James Apartments in Clearwater shortly before 11 p.m., then found abandoned an hour later.

The boy was still asleep in the back seat of the car, which was backed into a parking spot at an apartment complex on Leo Lane.
