A team of Citrus County volunteers are bringing a once-dead construction project back to life.

The George Washington Carver Community Center in Crystal River is finally coming together. The foundation for the center was poured in 2009, but then work came to a halt because of financial problems.

Recently, the project was rescued. Project president Coressa Natteal said credit for that belongs to a lot of people who put in a lot of time and effort.

"I am overjoyed that we got to this point and we should be opening soon," she said.

One of the people who pitched in is Harold Walker. Walker heard about the stalled project and decided to help. Now he's leading the charge to get the center finished.

"This is the community center being built by the community it will serve," Walker said.

Walker and his crew are volunteering their time and energy out of the kindness of their hearts. Word of their generosity has spread around, and they've received a lot of help and donations along the way.

"We are literally fundraising as we go," Walker said. "I buy a lot of stuff off Craigslist."

Natteal says she and her group do what they can to say thank you.

"We feed them, give them a good lunch," Natteal said. "That's what they get paid."

Walker says if the donations continue to come in, they hope to have the building done by July. After it's done, the plan is to set up after school programs and more.
