Most people think cooking at home is a healthier option than going out but it depends on what you're cooking.

According to Time.com, fitness experts recommend people munch on healthier fare while cooking, like bell peppers, carrot sticks or sliced cucumbers.

For those who want to snack on the not-so healthy options, they can simply scale back the calories elsewhere - like in the amount of olive oil used in meals.

Also, another way to stay away from unwanted calories is to break that after-dinner desert habit.

But for those who must indulge, a square of dark chocolate is recommended.

Depression and diabetes

Doctors say they are seeing an increase in the link between depression and diabetes.

Researchers cite many reasons for the link and point to diabetes often bringing mood swings. That can be due to blood sugar fluctuations or the psychological stress of having the disease.

Health experts say the best way to treat mood swings in patients is to get physical health under control and check for low blood sugar.

"Don't hide your feelings, talk to your family and friends," said Dr. Scott Isaacs with Atlanta Endocrine Associates. "You could seek out a support group
(be)cause talking to other people going through the same thing can be very helpful, and talk to your doctor openly and honestly about your feelings."

While mood swings can affect anyone with diabetes, the Mayo Clinic says Type 1 diabetes patients who are depressed may have a greater chance of developing Type 2 diabetes.
