Each of these accomplishments deserves congratulations- and a cake!

Nathan Burnside, who has worked for the Clearwater Police Department since 2002, was promoted to sergeant Thursday.

At the same time, his longtime K9 partner, Scout, retired after working six years as a drug dog.

Scout and Burnside have worked on numerous cases over the years, visiting schools, airports and other locations in the search for illegal drugs.

The K9, who will be 7 in December, was trained to sniff out heroin, cocaine, meth and marijuana.

Some of Scout's largest finds have been:

  •  $256,000 of drug currency (located within a drug house)
  • 1,000 pounds of marijuana being shipped in a cargo container
  • $120,000 worth of methamphetamine being concealed within a door frame of a vehicle

"He definitely has a sensitive nose," Burnside said of his partner. "He was a great drug dog."

After Sgt. Burnside's promotion ceremony, Scout got to feast on a doggie cake courtesy of the fine folks at Woof Gang Bakery and Grooming in Clearwater.
