St. Petersburg City Council member Wengay Newton is throwing his hat into the race to become the next state representative.

Newton is trying to fill the seat of Darryl Rouson.

For the last two terms, Newton has served on the city council. He said he plans to take some of his same projects that have worked well, to the state level.

"Always been a people’s advocate," Newton said. "I will go up and fight hard for my district which encompasses south St. Pete, Manatee, north Sarasota and Hillsborough. And its about 85,000 residents in that district."

While Newton is looking to become state representative, his brother Will is looking to fill his seat on the city council.
