A Winter Haven couple is facing charges after their unresponsive baby was taken to the hospital.

Christopher Craft, 23, and Lauren McCann, 25, were arrested this week on charges of child neglect. Craft is facing additional charges of violation of probation.

According to the Polk County Sheriff's Office, deputies responded to a Winter Haven home shortly before midnight Monday after receiving a call about an unresponsive 11-month-old baby who had been taken to the hospital.

Deputies said they learned Craft and McCann had been smoking synthetic cannabis, known as K2, earlier in the day in the presence of the baby, who was in their care. McCann left Craft and baby to go to a store, and when she returned, she found the baby lying on a bed. The baby was unresponsive, so she called emergency responders.

Emergency crews responded and found the baby had red eyes that were wide open and was not responding to any stimuli. K2 residue was noticeably present on the baby and the bed where they found the baby, deputies said.

Residents who lived near the couple reacted to the news on Wednesday.

"I’m not surprised the way they were [smoking K2]," said former neighbor Tom Makuta. "Those parents shouldn’t be parents at all. They should not be allowed to have those kids."

The baby was taken to Lakeland Regional Health, then to Tampa General Hospital for care. The baby was released from the hospital in good condition on Tuesday, and is currently in the care of a family member.

McCann was arrested Tuesday morning. She is being held without bond.

Craft fled the scene on Monday but was located on Wednesday and taken into custody. His first appearance is expected to be held on Thursday.
