Mary Lumapas has been through a lot in her life.

Three bouts of cancer, a bone marrow transplant, and now the University of South Florida student needs a kidney.

"I know how important this gift is and I'm not going to waste it," said Lumapas as she wiped away tears. "And I want whoever donates to know that."

It was an emotional plea after Lumapas' yearlong search for a kidney.

But the 20-year-old is not doing it alone.

After learning of her story, her classmates joined the efforts and launched a campuswide campaign.

"This is something we should be doing," said President of the Pre-Med American Medical Student Association Kevin Petersen. "I feel everyone should be doing it. You know just help someone who needs help."

Through the university's pre-med club, there have been fundraisers to help offset costs for a future transplant. There is also a Facebook page to find a donor. It's part of their "Share Your Spare" campaign.

"We're just encouraging people to share it, because someday if it gets shared enough hopefully that one person will see it," Lumapas said.

That one person could give Lumapas her wish — a kidney.

In mid-November, there will be another event to raise awareness about the campaign.
