The suspect in a fatal hit-and-run crash has turned herself in at the Orient Road Jail, according to the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office.

Jennifer Race, 28, of Tampa is charged with leaving the scene of a crash involving a death and being a habitual traffic offender, according to HCSO spokesperson Debbie Carter.

Carter said deputies had developed information that identified Race and that Rice made arrangements with her attorney to turn herself in.

Deputies said Lawrence Lockhart Jr.'s 2006 Mercury Mystic was struck by a 2015 Cadillac near Waters Avenue and Sheldon Road shortly before 4 p.m Friday. Detectives said the other driver took off, leaving behind the smashed Cadillac.

Lockhart, 83, was taken to St. Joseph's Hospital, where he died from the injuries.

Detectives said surveillance video from a nearby convenience store showed the driver who slammed into Lockhart's car. Shortly after the crash, that female driver was seen asking someone for a ride, getting into that vehicle and leaving the scene, according to detectives.
