A wheelchair-bound Polk County man says his wife tried to kill him but he blames himself for sending her over the edge.

James Olds is battling multiple sclerosis, but he says it wasn't the health problems that almost killed him, it was his own wife Cherry Olds, a Polk State college professor.

“She took the pillow case off," he said. "She put the pillow over my face, and I just said, 'did you try to kill me?' And she said, 'that's the point,' and then she came at me the second time.”

James has been married to his wife Cherry for 25 years. He said he believes the stress from his condition drove his wife to try to smother him with a pillow.

“Somehow my baby snapped and I can't help but think that I was responsible for her snapping,” he said.

The incident landed Cherry behind bars, facing attempted murder charges.

But her husband wanted to set the record straight.

He says the visible scar on his head is not from the incident. And his wife is not a monster.

“I just want everybody to know that I've always loved my wife,” he said. “I always will love my wife and I still do today.”

Sheriff Grady Judd wasn't as forgiving as he gave information about Cherry's arrest.

“This is horrific," Judd said. "What even makes it more horrific is when we learned she's a professor at Polk State College teaching students. but at the end of the day we're got her locked up in jail where she's facing second-degree murder.”

Cherry is being held without bond and is on leave from Polk State College during this investigation.

In the meantime her husband admits that he no longer feels safe around his wife but he's going to stand by her side no matter what.

“If you want to go back and pin it on anything, I'll pin it on first Corinthians chapter 13 verse four and five, I'll love my wife unconditionally,” he said.

Olds says he has filed for divorce and has a protective order to keep his wife away from him. He also said he knew about his wife’s affair and he’s hoping she gets the help she needs.

He went to her first appearance hearing Monday where she was denied bail.
