An 11-year-old girl whose quick thinking kept her and her brother safe during a burglary was honored Monday by Tampa police.

Tampa Police Chief Eric Ward and Nicolas Ware, the 911 dispatcher who took Annabelle Sanders' call, were on hand at Coleman Middle School as she was honored.

Police say Annabelle and her brother Brody were home alone last month when Andre Russell Jr., 18, broke into their home on Manhattan Avenue.

The sixth-grade student and her brother barricaded themselves in a bedroom and she called 911 while Russell rummaged through the residence, police said.

Russell took Brody's iPad, then fled as officers arrived, police said. Russell ran through the backyard and jumped the fence, but was caught on the property of the business next door.

The iPad was found in the backyard and returned to Brody.

According to Tampa police, Sanders' quick call to 911 led to the suspect's arrest.

Sanders and her brother were not injured.
