Five-week-old Scooter is every bit the silly, squirmy puppy, despite the cast on one of his hind legs.

“He’s a very good boy,” said Ashley Gandees, Medical Manager at the Suncoast SPCA in New Port Richey. “All he wants to do is kiss and kiss, kiss and kiss!”

It’s hard to believe that just last weekend, a good Samaritan brought Scooter to the shelter after finding him limping along the side of a road.

Not sure who left the puppy there, or what happened to him, Gandees said she immediately knew something was wrong.

X-rays quickly revealed Scooter’s leg was broken.

“His fracture is just north of his little knee area,” Gandees said. “The very end of that long bone.”

For now, Gandees is keeping Scooter in a soft cast. But, she said he needs surgery. The broken bone must be pinned back together otherwise, the injury could lead to an amputation down the road.

Gandees said the surgery is expected to cost up to $600. For a shelter that takes in about 100 new pets every other week, it’s a lot of money.

“At this point, if we aren’t able to raise that money, we wouldn’t be able to go through with the surgery,” Gandees said.

That’s why the organization is asking the community for help.
