A Hillsborough jury found an Orlando man guilty of first-degree murder on Thursday night.

Jerome Hayes was on trial for the deadly shooting of Fred Turner on Interstate 4 in 2013. The jury started deliberating around 1 p.m. Thursday afternoon before finding him guilty of first-degree murder around 8:30 p.m.

Before deliberations began, Hayes took the stand to tell his side of the story. He was the only witness for the defense.

"It's hard to get you where my head was at the time because I don't know why I got like that," Hayes testified.

Hayes told the jury about the fight his friend had at a Tampa strip club that night. His friend, Ronnie Isgett, was hurt. But Hayes testified that he was never looking for the person who beat up his friend.

Instead, Hayes said he and Isgett were driving along I-4 and arguing with one another when the shots were fired.

"I grabbed the gun and it was just that fast," Hayes said. "Just that fast."

Hayes testified that he wasn't aiming at anyone when Turner was hit. Turner was never part of the fight at the bar.

But prosecutors said Hayes waited outside the bar and followed Turner's vehicle.

Then prosecutors said Hayes shot Turner because Hayes thought the driver was the man who hurt his friend. Turner's 911 call also appeared to clash with Hayes testimony.

"All of a sudden, this car pulls up behind me quick, and this guy pulls up beside me, he rolls his window down he pulls back behind me flips me off then held a gun up in the window," said Turner on the 911 call.

During closing arguments, the jury and Turner's family heard his voice once more - the last moments of the victim's life and the gunshots that killed him.

Hayes said he should be punished for killing Turner, but he should not be convicted of first-degree premeditated murder.
