A Manatee County family finally has a place to remember their loved one who made the ultimate sacrifice for our country.

A memorial with the name of Marine Sgt. John R. Holmes newly-inscribed on it was unveiled on Veterans Day.

Holmes was wounded during the Vietnam War, leaving him in a coma. He passed away 33 years later.

The Holmes Beach resident’s family has his Purple Heart and Bronze Star but until now, they had no grave or place to grieve.

On Veterans Day, Holmes’ name was added to the Vietnam War Honor Roll in Bradenton.

Holmes’ family noticed his name missing from the wall around 10 years ago and have been working to have it added ever since.

His sister Patricia Holmes says she is thankful for the dedication to her brother.

“I feel like I can talk with him and that is what I have wanted to do most, is talk to him," she said.

There was a ceremony as his name was unveiled on the memorial.

Veterans including Paul Wukits were on hand to show unity. Wukits also fought in Vietnam and says it was a nightmare.

“It was very terrifying," he said. "I don’t care how brave you are. When you see rounds and explosions and shrapnel, it's hard to take."

Wukits is glad a fellow solder is being remembered.

“It gives me chills and tears in my eyes," he said.
