Where State Road 52 in Pasco County takes a sharp right turn to roll down the hills of St. Leo, there's a small coffee shop with big dreams.

"We believe the coffee is a vehicle that will allow us to help people worldwide," Douglas Torres said, who owns the business with his brother Juan.

A Cup of Organic started on the side of the road in 2010. Torres and his brother parked where State Road 54 becomes State Road 56 and set up shop.

"We had a tent and a generator," Torres said. "And hand-written signs telling people to stop by and sample our coffee."

The business grew, and now Torres has his physical location at 33024 State Road 52 in San Antonio. He also has two other locations, one in Keiser University and the other in Jabil's St. Petersburg office. He hopes to open two more in the next year.

It's a family business from plant to cup. Torres's brother and sister own the coffee fields in Honduras -- where Torres was born.

"We know where the coffee comes from, we know where the fields are," he said. "I've been there."

For Torres, it's more than just business. Coffee is just the way to achieve a greater goal. Since starting five years ago, his company funded eight mission trips to help those in need in other countries.

Many have been in Honduras, but they've also been in Kenya, Ukraine and Haiti.

The trips to Honduras are special.

"There's no better feeling than being able to help my people," Torres said. "There's nothing better than seeing the joy on someone's face when you are able to make a difference in their lives."

Torres knows this feeling first hand. He and his friends delivered 250 pairs of shoes to kids in Torres's home town. For many of the children, it was their first pair of shoes, ever.

"I was there, I could've been there," he said. "I was blessed enough to come to the United States in 1980, my life changed, and I believe other kids need an opportunity to change their lives."

His company also built an orphanage in Tegucigalpa, Honduras, called City of Hope Orphanage. It can house up to 23 girls. Torres flew down to Honduras to help lay the foundation himself.

He says he gets no greater joy than knowing his efforts help others.

"Nothing but joy," he said. "It's joy. Unexplainable joy that only God can give."

A Cup of Organic coffee grounds is sold in stores across Tampa Bay and can be purchased online.
