A Mulberry High School teacher was arrested Monday after authorities said he allowed students to see pornography on his cell phone.

Vadi Valez-Gonzalez, 47, of Riverview faces two counts of showing obscene material to a minor and four counts of using a two-way communication device to commit a felony.

According to the Polk County Sheriff's Office, four ninth-grade students in Gonzalez's intensive reading class last Wednesday saw adult male pornography on Gonzalez's iPhone, which was sitting on his desk in plain view.

"It’s like, are you kidding me? You showed this pornography to ninth grade children, two girls and two guys, are you kidding me?" said Sheriff Grady Judd.

The first student approached Gonzalez's desk to ask a question about an assignment and saw websites showing adult male pornography, including a slide show with images of two adults engaged in intercourse and a full body shot of a naked adult male, investigators say.

"The young lady told the detectives, 'I went back to my desk and thought I can’t believe what I saw.' So she did her own investigation and when she went back up there pretending to throw the paper in the garbage she took her own video of the pornography the teacher had running on his desk," said Judd.

Three other students saw Gonzalez's phone on his desk and saw the same type of images and videos, according to an arrest affidavit. The students reported it to authorities.

Detectives say they obtained a search warrant for Gonzalez's phone and found he had visited a pornographic mobile website 382 times between Sept. 30 and Oct. 13, including at least two occasions during school hours.

A forensic examination of the phone showed that during school hours last Wednesday, pornographic advertisement banners were running on Gonzalez's phone, detectives say. The four students who saw the images were between 14 and 16 years old, according to the affidavit.

Gonzalez has been placed on administrative leave from his teaching job, Polk County Schools said. They say he does not have any previous disciplinary actions in his personnel file.
