An investigation into reports of a shooting in Brooksville ended with the "victim" being taken into custody, deputies said.

Shaquaille Delaine, 21, was arrested overnight at an apartment in Brooksville in connection with an armed robbery that had happened Thursday in Hillsborough County.

According to the Hernando County Sheriff's Office, deputies responded to a local hospital at about 4 p.m. after receiving a call about a man who had arrived in the Emergency Department with a gunshot wound.

Deputies say the man, later identified as Delaine, said he was approached by a man who attempted to rob him at gunpoint. Delaine said he ran away and was shot in the leg. After that he went to the hospital to receive treatment for his injuries.

Delaine told deputies the suspect fled from the scene in a vehicle, and so detectives started working to identify the suspect.

At about midnight, deputies said they received a call from Hillsborough County detectives. The detectives were in Hernando County looking for Delaine in connection with an armed robbery that had happened at 2 p.m., about two hours before Delaine went to the hospital with a gunshot wound.

Detectives said gunfire was exchanged during the robbery, and Delaine and at least one other person were shot.

Detectives from both agencies found Delaine at an apartment on Darby Lane in Brooksville and took him into custody without further incident.

During the interview, detectives said Delaine admitted to being involved with the armed robbery, and that after leaving Hillsborough County, he was dropped off at a location in Brooksville.

Delaine said he made up the story about being robbed and shot so he could "cover his tracks so he did not get in trouble," detectives said.

Delaine is facing charges of armed burglary of a dwelling, aggravated battery and aggravated assault out of Hillsborough County. His bond has been set at $250,000.

Detectives say the original case of robbery is now considered unfounded in Hernando County, and Delaine will now face an additional charge of filing a false report to law enforcement.
