A Lithia family has a lot to be thankful for this season as their little boy, who nearly drowned three years ago, is making progress in his road to recovery.

Alex Cozzo was found in a friend’s pool three years ago. The family had just moved to Florida from New Jersey for a new start. The now 7-year-old suffered brain damage, and his parents say his prognosis was not good.

"He went from vegetated state, not opening eyes, not smiling, not doing anything,” said Alex’s mother, Bonnie Cozzo. “To smiling, blinking on command."

Alex’s father, Joe, is a music producer. He wanted to express the progress, so he wrote and produced a song called, “Road to Recovery.”

"Something for him to say, 'Hey, you know that song was written for me when I had this accident and my family didn't give up on me,' " he said.

The Cozzos continue on a road they pray is paved with more progress.

"Now that we have the hyperbaric chamber, he hasn't had any oxygen in almost two weeks," Bonnie Cozzo said.

The song was written and performed by Inaya Day and produced by Joe Cozzo.

“Road to recovery, what lies ahead for Alex, what he's got to face in the future and how to overcome it,” said Cozzo.

The couple hopes the song will help other people through their struggles, too.

"Although the song was written for Alex, I mean the lyrics will touch anyone going through any sort of recovery,” said Joe. “Whether it be an accident, death of a loved one, cancer, drug addiction."

The song will be released online on Dec. 4.
