A Florida Polytechnic student has helped create and develop a new fishing app.

Geoffrey Ruiz, who graduated from Lecanto High School, worked with a team of fellow students on the Identafish app, which they then presented at the university's STEM Student's BIO Expo in November.

The app is designed to provide information about any fish caught in the Gulf of Mexico. The user enters information like color, markings or whether the fish has scales or skin, into the app, which then identifies the fish and shares information about regulations and its habitat.

Ruiz said he was inspired to make the app when he couldn't identify a fish that he caught.

"One day I was fishing in Ozello and I didn't know what kind of fish I caught," said Ruiz. "It gave me the idea to create this app with my group at Florida Poly."

The app is in the demo phase, but Ruiz hopes it will one day connect with the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission. He and his teammates also hope to make the app even more user-friendly, by having users take photos of the fish, which the app would then identify.
