Tampa police say a 29-year-old man that died after a traffic crash Friday did not die as a result of the crash.

Authorities said Maurice A. Garrett was driving a car that struck a fence on the northeast corner of East Ellicott Street and north 40th Street just after 2 p.m.

After hitting the fence, the car continued westbound on Ellicott St. and struck a vehicle on 40th St. The car then struck a tree near the Family Dollar parking lot at 4900 N. 40th St.

Garrett was taken to an area hospital where he later died. Authorities discovered that he had suffered upper body trauma that was unrelated to the accident.

Detectives said the incident was not caused by a random act of violence.

The investigation is ongoing.
