Detectives say they've ruled out bullying as the motive behind a Lecanto High School student shooting himself in front of his teacher and classmates earlier this month.

The 15-year-old student, whom Bay News 9 is not naming, put a semi-automatic handgun to his head in an English class Nov. 10 and pulled the trigger. He was been hospitalized since then in Tampa.

According to the Citrus County Sheriff's Office, detectives were able to talk to the teen for the first time this week, and he assured them he was not bullied by anyone.

The boy also was adamant that he never intended to harm anyone other than himself, detectives said.

Investigators say the student had a Walther P1 9mm semi-automatic handgun with six rounds in the magazine and one in the chamber and an additional magazine with eight rounds was found in a plastic gun case near the site of the shooting.

"Determining motive or a reason for why this shooting occurred has been a priority since day one and continues to be," sheriff's Capt. Brad Smith said. "We can now put the bullying issue to rest after it was confirmed by the boy that it was not a factor for his actions.  It's a relief to know that he is recovering well and, hopefully, he will get the help he needs in the future."
