A husband and wife took quite an unusual step to run for the Hillsborough County School Board together.

"Husband and wife, we're a team, we're team players and we're going to work together to make this happen," said Randy Toler.

They're running in different races for 2016: Randy Toler is running for the county-wide seat in District 7 while Alicia Toler is vying for District 3.

"I think she's probably a better politician than me, probably," Randy Toler joked.

But they share a common focus: helping special need students.

Their 8-year-old son suffers from autism. Randy and Alicia Toler said they don't like how their son was treated by the public school system. They want to see changes for other students.

"I feel that if nobody does anything, nothing changes," said Alicia Toler. "I don't like being one of those people who just sits in the corner and does nothing."

Politics is nothing new to the couple -- it's what brought them together.

Randy Toler, alone, has run for political office about seven times and lost each time.

Still, running for office together is a first for the married couple.

And although the Tolers admit they don't always agree, they said they want to see every child in Hillsborough County succeed.

A joint run for the school board is their way to try and make that happen.
