It's going to be a special Thanksgiving for one young girl and her family.

Kaley Fondeur had surgery on her leg at Shriners Children's Hospital in Tampa and is on the path to recovery during the holidays.

Fondeur, 9, had an external fixator in her leg taken out. Two devices were initially implanted in her right leg - the first to help lengthen her leg, the second to straighten it.

The surgeries have all been a part of treatment for proximal femoral focal deficiency, which prevented Kaley's leg from developing properly in the womb. Shriners Hospitals for Children helps provide quality medical care for children throughout the world regardless of their family's ability to pay.

When asked what she was looking forward to the most, Kaley said being active is at the top of her list.

"Mainly running with my friends at school," she said. "And playing the activities we do at PE."

Doctors said the device did its job on Kaley's leg.

Kaley's father Felix Fondeur said the family has plenty to be thankful for.

"We are always fearful because she's our princess," he said. "And she means the whole world to us."

Kaley will have to wear a brace on her other leg to keep it straight while she heals. Doctors anticipate one final surgery for Kaley around the age of 13.
