The city of Inverness will soon have its very first fire chief.

Joe Campfield is set to begin his new role on Monday.

Campfield is creating the Inverness Fire Department from scratch, bringing on 30 personnel members, including 12 volunteer firefighters.

Campfield, 49, is ending his 18-year tenure in Dunellon as public safety director/emergency management coordinator for the that city.

The new chief plans to work out of city hall for now until the Inverness fire station is opened.

Campfield, who grew up in Citrus County and attended Crystal River High School, will make $64,250 a year.
