A Manatee County agency is working to get the word out about affordable housing for veterans in the area.

While representatives say there will not be new housing made available, there is current housing available.

“It’s terrible,” said Don Courtney, chair of the Manatee County Veterans Council, about the lack of affordable housing.  “You see new developments going up, low 200s, low 500s. Where’s a guy going to go? There’s no place around here where you can get affordable housing. Period.”

Volunteers of America of Florida Inc., a nonprofit that provides housing and services to homeless veterans, wants vets to know about its services.

“Just the fact that to say I’ve got a place to go home to each night and not which street corner I can go to and get hassled,” said Courtney. “It’s going to mean a lot to the veterans of our community.”

Veterans services will be working to help identify veterans in need.
