Online shopping is hotter than ever this holiday shopping season, and there's no bigger e-commerce giant than Amazon.com. It's is the retail destination of choice for shoppers like Jesse Hoyer.

“It’s just so much easier to sit at home in front of a computer, pick out what you want and have it all delivered right to your door step,” Hoyer said.

The same can be said for Sean Estes.

“We got a bunch of Legos. We got some lights to decorate the house,” Estes said.  “I like to be able to read customer reviews of products I’m looking at, and so, with online shopping, I’m able to do that, you know, all from the comfort of my couch.”

And with the recent opening of the Amazon fulfillment center in Lakeland, an added perk for central Florida includes sometimes faster service.

Amazon Prime members like Estes are guaranteed free, two-day shipping, but he says since the center opened, delivery is often even quicker.

“We’ve had a couple of occasions where I’ve ordered something before noon and it’s actually gotten to our house that same day,” Estes said.

A few of the draw-backs: having to return items can be a bit of a pain if they don’t fit or get damaged, and there’s concern over packages being stolen if they’re left on your doorstep.  It happened to Hoyer last Christmas.

“One of the packages was stolen off my front porch, but Amazon was great," he said. "I called them, explained what happened. They refunded all the money for the purchases I didn’t get."

Whether you use Amazon or another e-commerce website, online holiday shopping is expected to hit $105 billion this year, nearly 20 percent of all holiday sales, continuing to chip away at those traditional, in-store sales.
