A 5-year-old girl was hit by an SUV while riding her bicycle in Auburndale, police say.

The crash happened shortly after 3 p.m. Wednesday in the 100 block of Adams Street.

The girl, identified as Jasira C. Santos, was flown to St. Joseph's Hospital in Tampa, where she underwent surgery. She is currently in critical condition.

According to Auburndale police, Jasira was riding her bicycle near the west edge of Adams Street. Her mother was nearby, as were several other children.

Police say a woman was seen driving a green 1995 Jeep Cherokee SUV erratically on Adams Street, and that witnesses were concerned she might hurt someone.

The woman was driving in the northbound lanes when, for unknown reasons, she either drifted or swerved into the southbound lanes, hitting Jasira and running over both the little girl and her bicycle, police said.

The SUV then hit a large above-ground water service line and came to a stop. Police say that as people ran to help, the woman put her vehicle in reverse and backed up until her rear wheels stopped against a wooden pole on the ground.

A witness said he saw the woman trying to leave, but he was able to take her keys out of the ignition before she could do so, police said.

The woman was taken to Winter Haven Hospital for treatment.

Police say early indications are that the woman was impaired by an unknown substance at the time of the crash. A blood sample has been obtained, which will be analyzed by the laboratory at the Florida Department of Law Enforcement. Charges will be determined after analysis of the blood sample is complete.

The investigation continues.
