Some residents of Anna Maria Island are dealing with a stinky situation.

Several homes surround Spring Lake, located on Holmes Beach. Residents say it used to be full of snook, mullet, tarpon, red fish, blue crabs and more.

Now, a mysterious fish kill has turned the lake into a cemetery.

"This little lake is a little nursery for all the baby fish from this area that swim around the island, so it's very sad to see a whole wipeout like that," said Melissa Williams, who reported the fish kill.

Residents and law enforcement are trying to get to the bottom of what happened. At first, they considered red tide, but they've since learned there may have been some illegal activity of a pool company dumping acid into the lake.

Also, a county lift station there had a water main break, which caused 22,000 gallons of sewage to spill into the water. The water main has since been repaired.

The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission and Environmental Protection Agency are working to determine what exactly killed the fish.
