A motorcycle driver was killed and his passenger was critically injured when another driver turned in front of them on U.S. 19 in north Clearwater on Saturday night, authorities said.

Lawrence J. Silva, 56, and Laurel  J. Silva, 59, both of Dunedin, were traveling north on U.S. 19 around 6:20 p.m. when a southbound Ford F-150 pickup truck attempted to turn onto Congress Avenue and drove into their path, the Florida Highway Patrol said.

The motorcycle hit the truck, throwing both riders. Lawrence Silva died at the scene, and Laurel Silva was transported to St. Joseph's Hospital in Tampa in critical condition.

The driver of the pickup, 70-year-old Walter Hertrich of Palm Harbor, suffered minor injuries and was taken to Mease Dunedin Hospital.

Charges are pending, the FHP said.
