A Hillsborough County deputy was injured in a six-car accident in Gibsonton on Tuesday.

According to the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office, the accident involved two tractor trailers and occurred on Gibsonton Drive at the overpass to I-75.

The deputy, who was driving a motorcycle, was freed by fire rescue officials and flown to Tampa General Hospital. Three others were injured in the crash and were taken to local hospitals. Their conditions are unknown at this time.

According to reports, the deputy, identified as 37-year-old Tim Berg, was stopped at red light waiting for traffic to move when he was struck from behind by a utility truck that dragged him 150 feet.

Deputy Tim Berg is a 9-year veteran of the sheriff's office.

Berg ran into a red truck, which pinned him under both vehicles.

"It took fire rescue over an hour to extricate him. The entire time he was conscious but in a lot of pain," said Colonel J.R. Burton of the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Department.

"It looked like the worst thing I’ve ever seen," said witness Brian Clarke.

Berg was injured with lascerations and a possible broken ankle. He is expected to be OK.

"He is in tip top shape and we contribute that to helping him survive here at the scene," said Burton.

Berg and his wife, who is also a deputy, were credited for helping to stop some would-be car burglars while they were off duty.

Berg is one of 27 deputies in the Hillsborough motorcycle unit.

Both directions of Gibsonton Drive were closed following the crash but have since reopened.
