A Manatee County homeowner took matters into his own hands when an intruder tried to break into his home.

Juan Hernandez is currently remodeling a home for his family to move into in Bradenton.

But while taking a break during the middle of the day Tuesday, someone stole the air conditioning unit, lighting and other items from the home.

Hernandez called the Manatee County Sheriff's Office and filed a report. He said he was worried about the burglars coming back, so he decided to stay the night at the property.

He was right. Hernandez said during the night, he woke up and heard something.

"I was sleeping and heard doors slam," Hernandez said. "There was a little car and truck parked backwards to get inside."

Hernandez said when he heard the suspect coming up the stairs, he hid on the porch in the dark. When the suspect finally made it to the top of the stairs, Hernandez confronted the suspect, who deputies identified as 35-year-old Muhammad Solomon.

Hernandez struck Solomon to the ground and grabbed his gun. He then shot Solomon in the ankle, grabbed him and held him to the ground until deputies arrived.

"I can't believe it," said Juana Vasquez Hernandez, Juan's wife.

Hernandez's family said they were grateful he was not hurt, but they are now nervous about moving into their future dream home.

Deputies said Solomon is a convicted felon with a history of arrests. He was booked into the Manatee County Jail with a bond totaling $27,000.
