Clearwater police will conduct an event Saturday in which residents can trade unwanted guns for gift cards.

Handguns can be exchanged for a $50 Walmart gift card, while long guns will earn a $100 Walmart gift card.

No questions will be asked at the exchange. The serial numbers of guns will be checked to make sure they are not stolen; if they are stolen, an attempt will be made to contact the owner, police said.

The guns will then be destroyed. A similar event in 2011 collected nearly 200 guns.

"This is a safe and controlled way for people to dispose of a gun they no longer want or need around the house," said Police Chief Dan Slaughter. "Too many times, we have weapons that are stolen during residential burglaries. This way, those unwanted guns won't end up in the wrong hands."

The event will take place from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at the Joe DiMaggio Sports Complex, at the corner of Drew Street and Old Coachman Road.

BB guns and pellet guns will be accepted, but will not be eligible for a gift card.
