Three candidates are running to represent District 6 on the Tampa City Council.

Guido Maniscalco, Tommy Castellano and Jackie Toledo are vying for the city council seat.

Maniscalco is a Tampa native who manages his family's jewelry business and prides himself in staying connected with the community.

"They want to know why we can't fix our roads, why can't we have better lighting here for our children or folks who choose to walk," Maniscalco said. "That's something that we need to look at."

Maniscalco said he considers mass transit to be the biggest issue facing Tampa.

"The biggest issue in Tampa that's holding us back from success further down the road is that mass transit system," he said.

Castellano, a long-time business owner, is running for the District 6 seat too.

"I think I can bring economic opportunity here," he said.

Castellano was born and raised in Tampa. He wants to put more of a focus on improving neighborhoods.

"I know a lot of economic growth goes to the Westshore area," Castellano said. "A lot of economic growth goes downtown, but our area here is stagnated and I think we can do a little better."

Toledo, a traffic engineer, said the city can do better in the transportation arena. It's why she said she's running for the seat.

"Someone needs to be an advocate on behalf of transportation," Toledo said.

The Tampa native said her job as an engineer makes her the most qualified.

"As an engineer, in general, I'm a problem solver," Toledo said. "I think that provides me an expertise that I can utilize on the city council."

With low voter turnout expected, the three candidates said they're pushing even harder to get their name out, while highlighting the issues they care about and encouraging voters to go to the polls.

Thousands of absentee ballots have already gone out in the District 6 race.

Early voting starts on Feb. 23 and runs through March 1. Election day is March 3.
