Winter Haven police are investigating a fatal shooting.

According to police, Maurice Knight, 21, was shot after an altercation that started at Pierre's Hot Spot and continued at the RaceTrac gas station at the corner of Highway 17 and Havendale Boulevard.

Police said a crowd was in the parking lot when the initial argument broke out at 1 a.m. Sunday at Pierre's Hot Spot at 1300 Third Street SW.

An unidentified man pulled a gun and fired several shots striking a vehicle numerous times, according to police. The crowd quickly left the area, traveling to the RaceTrac gas station  at Hwy. 17 and Havendale Blvd.

Moments later, someone inside a silver car speeding by the RaceTrac fired more gunshots.

Knight, who was standing outside of his vehicle, was struck in the chest. A Lakeland resident, Knight died at the scene.

According to witnesses, the suspect vehicle is a newer model silver Chevrolet Impala or similar style vehicle. The vehicle was last seen speeding westbound on Havendale Blvd. It is believed the occupants of the vehicle are from Lakeland, police said.
