There were two more instances of wrong-way driving in Tampa during the last 24 hours, including one where a driver almost collided with a deputy's cruiser.
According to the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office, Lieutenant Leon Paige was traveling westbound on east 142nd Avenue near 19th Street in his unmarked patrol vehicle when he observed a 2005 Hyundai Sonata traveling eastbound on 142nd Avenue in the westbound lanes.
Lt. Paige had to swerve out of the way to avoid being struck by the Hyundai.
Moments later, deputies stopped the Hyundai, who authorities say was being driven by Cornelious Watson. Deputies said Watson, who refused a sobriety test, was impaired.
Watson was charged with driving while impaired and felony driving while license suspended.
Labeled as a habitual traffic offender with a prior conviction for DUI, Watson was arrested and booked into the Orient Road Jail.
In a separate incident, an 18-year-old wrong-way driver crashed his car early Sunday on the Veterans Expressway.
According to the Florida Highway Patrol, Basil Avatar Scruby of Largo entered the Veterans in the wrong direction from Waters Avenue.
Traveling southbound in the northern bound lanes just after 7 a.m., Scruby realized his error and tried to manuever to the southbound lanes, troopers said.
However, Scruby did not slow down and traveled across the median, which is a construction zone and traveled off a median overpass, crashing his 2007 Ford sedan.
Scruby, who was taken to Town 'n Country Hospital with minor injuries, was ticketed for careless driving.
There has been several wrong-way crashes of late on Bay area roadways, including multiple crashes that resulted in fatalities.
