Some Hernando County students are getting a chance to chill out at school.

The students are playing video games and ping pong in their own student lounge at West Hernando Middle School.

School officials set aside a spot where students can relax, but it isn't just about fun and games. They can only use the lounge if they are not having any behavior issues and their grades are good.

Sixth-grader Evan Alexandre is loving it.

"It's great," he said. "Yesterday I was just playing ping pong and now they have the Wii set up and they have board games."

Students can use the lounge during lunch or study hall. It gives teachers a little extra time to focus on the students who need added help to bring up their grades.

Principal Lori Lessley says the lounge is a great motivator.

"More and more kids are coming and I think they are enjoying it," she said.

Evan couldn't agree more.

"This is a good thing," he said. "I think it encourages other students to get their grades up so they can come here."

The lounge just opened this week. Principal Lessley got the idea from a school in Pasco County.
