Detectives investigating an increase of bike thefts in downtown St. Petersburg have made an arrest.

Kibali Jamal Mangrum, 45, is charged with one count of grand theft of a bicycle. Detectives said he is believed to be the suspect seen in the January 29th video stealing a bike at 2nd Avenue North and 1st Street.

Detectives said at the time of his arrest Mangrum was found in possession of bolt cutters.

Additionally, Mangrum was charged with dealing in stolen property after pawning another bicycle stolen from the downtown area, police said.

Detectives believe that Mangrum is responsible for other downtown bike thefts and additional charges may be pending.

Since January 1st, over 39 bicycles have been stolen, many of them being expensive models that were secured with cable locks at the time they were taken.

Detectives suggest bike owners take extra precautions to prevent theft by utilizing high quality extra strength bike locks that make cutting more difficult.
