The chemistry lab at Mitchell High School will likely be closed for the rest of the school year.

A fire broke out at the school, located in Trinity, Wednesday night.

Firefighters responded to the call, which came in at 7:28 p.m. When they arrived, they found the fire in the science and technology building on the school's campus, which is located at 2323 Little Road.

Crews had the fire knocked down about 15 minutes after they arrived. Officials said the fire was contained to a chemistry lab, but smoke did get into about a dozen classrooms. The lab was heavily damaged.

The rooms were aired out overnight.

Nine classrooms were blocked off Thursday morning, with students relocating to other rooms.

According to Principal Jim Michaels, desks, light fixtures and most of the chemistry equipment was all destroyed in the lab.

"The classroom will not be able to be used for quite a while," Michaels said. "It’s pretty much a complete loss, the classroom”

According to Pasco County schools, contractors will gut the chemistry labs and rebuild them.
