A 55-year-old bicyclist was killed Monday night while riding in St. Petersburg.

Around 11:30 p.m., Glenn Wheeler Coggeshall  was traveling south on 28th Street N in 11000 block, along the west edge of the southbound curb lane, when he was struck by a vehicle, St. Petersburg police said.

The vehicle, a 2005 Hyundai Elantra driven by Mark Alexander Hanson, 46, had been heading south on 28th Street N in the southbound curb lane.

Hanson said he did not see Coggeshall, according to the police report.

The right front of the Hyundai struck the rear tire of the bicycle. Coggeshall was thrown from his bicycle and struck his head on the vehicle. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

There is no overhead lighting in the area, and Coggeshall, who was wearing dark clothing, did not have any lights on his bicycle.

Police said that neither alcohol nor drugs were involved in the crash and charges are not expected.
