GTE Financial has teamed up with Southeastern University in Lakeland to open a campus branch credit union.

The credit union will be run by students who have been trained by GTE Financial.

"They get to open up accounts," said GTE Financial spokesman Brian Best. "They could do loan opportunities, the whole gamut of a financial institution."

The students will also teach fellow students financial literacy both inside the credit union and in personal finance classes required by the university.

How to build credit is one of the issues the student credit union workers will address.

"That it's important for things like getting a loan for a car or getting a mortgage for their house or something like that," said student Sophia Ramos.

The credit union branch includes an ATM and non-students are allowed to be customers.
