Everyday Hero Walter Kowerduck knows hospice first hand. His wife passed away while in hospice care three years ago.

Alexander, who goes by the nickname Rush, decided to give back to the organization that did so much for his wife.

The 97-year-old started collecting aluminum cans 10 years ago. Rush collects, crushes and packs the cans from the community and sells them to a recycling center.

Rush made more than $8,000 and also earned another nickname, “The Can Man.” Every penny Rush made was donated to hospice. He said he enjoyed giving back.

“I’m not a hero,” Rush said. “I’ll go out of my way sometimes to do a guy a favor, but I believe do unto others as you have them do unto you.”

Unfortunately, just a few days ago, Rush had to give up his can recycling on the advice of his doctor.
