A well-known landmark in Old Homosassa has been saved from demolition.

The water tower in Old Homosassa means different things to different people, but one thing is for sure: it's not just a water tower. To the locals, it's part of the community.

The 50-year-old tower isn't used any more but it remains a slice of history. To postmaster Barb Oberski, the tower means home.

"It's a small town," she said. "It means a lot."

Last spring the Homosassa Special Water District decided to tear the tower down. That's when Marian MacRae and others started the fight to save it.

"When you come into Old Homosassa it welcomes you," McRae said. "When you drive out it's the last thing you see."

With a lot of help and support, MacRae formed a group called the Old Homosassa Historical Preservation Society. They are going to buy the tower.

"It's saved now," MacRae said. "It won't be torn down. Now we just have to restore it."

The old water tower still needs a lot of restoration work, so the group is collecting donations to make that happen. If you'd like to help, visit oldhomosassaheritagecouncil.com.
