A St. Petersburg City council member who discussed the new agreement with the Tampa Bay Rays with Mayor Rick Kriseman is talking about the meeting.

Councilman Karl Nurse knows a fair bit about the ongoing saga between the Rays and St. Petersburg.

“Uncertainty is its own negative,” Nurse said.

Nurse saw the last agreement that would have let the Rays look for other stadium sites in Pinellas and Hillsborough counties fall apart. Members of council voted it down back in December 2014 when they had concerns about the split of revenue if the Tropicana Field site is redeveloped after the Rays leave.

“Life is a learning experience,” said Nurse.

Nurse said Mayor Rick Kriseman learned the hard way the first time.

That’s why Kriseman is reaching out to each council member individually to discuss the new agreement he has with the Rays. This time, it’s clear that the Rays will get nothing if they leave and the Tropicana Field site is redeveloped.

“The public needs to understand you’re talking about $100 million of land so that’s a considerable amount of money to recognize you’re not going to have to split,” said Nurse.

Nurse isn’t sure when Kriseman might bring his new agreement before the St. Petersburg City Council but he is sure Kriseman won’t do it again unless this time he has the votes.

“He’d like to make sure that he tests the water," Nurse said. "He’ll make sure there’s a majority on council that’s comfortable with this."

The question is, will the changes be enough to change the minds of those who didn’t vote for the first agreement? Will this finally give the Rays the chance they want to look for other stadium sites and improve attendance in Hillsborough or Pinellas County?

Nurse said the other important part of the agreement is if the Rays leave the current Tropicana Field it cannot be redeveloped until the Rays are done playing baseball there.
