One teenager was killed and two others were wounded when gunfire erupted at a birthday party Saturday night in Tampa's Sulphur Springs neighborhood, police said.

About 40 to 50 teenagers ages 15 to 16 were celebrating a birthday in the area of E Sitka Avenue and N 9th Street around 10:30 p.m. when shots rang out. At least three people were shot, according to Tampa police.

One teenager was killed, and two others  were taken to Tampa General Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. Police have not released their identities.

It wasn't immediately known whether the shooter was in a car or on foot. Investigators said witnesses were providing conflicting reports.
