Two projects to reduce road flooding in the Lutz and Lake Magdalene areas have moved one step closer to construction.

Hillsborough County commissioners recently approved up to $400,000 in funding assistance from the Southwest Florida Water Management District (Swiftmud) for the Lynette Drive Drainage Improvements and Bearss Avenue Drainage Improvements projects.

During the past three years Hillsborough County has received nearly $4 million in matching Swiftmud cooperative funding for projects to improve roadway drainage in neighborhoods throughout the county.

The Lynette Drive Drainage Improvement Project is an effort to resolve the road flooding on Lynette Drive between Layne Place and Duque Road by enlarging an existing pond to enhance water quality treatment and provide storage, upgrading an underground drainage conveyance and restoring the historical water levels in a series of ponds and wetlands.

Up to $200,000 in Swiftmud cooperative funding will be matched by money budgeted from Hillsborough County’s Community Investment Tax fund. The Lynette Drive Drainage Improvement Project is expected to be completed by winter 2016.

The Bearss Avenue Drainage Improvement Project is an effort to resolve the road flooding on Bearss Avenue between Lake Magdalene Boulevard and Lake Emerald Boulevard by upgrading the undersized  roadway crossings on Bearss Avenue from Lake Magdalene Boulevard to Lake Emerald Boulevard.

In addition, the project will modify an existing pond control structure and construct a new pond for additional treatment of the outfall to Lake Magdalene. Up to $200,000 in Swiftmud cooperative funding will be matched by money budgeted from the Public Works Department Stormwater Management Fund. The Bearss Avenue Drainage Improvement Project is expected to be completed by late summer 2016.
