An Auburndale man is facing charges in connection with the abuse of a 2-month-old girl in his care.

Norman Gaskins III, 19, was arrested Monday after deputies said he admitted to shaking the little girl, who was crying and would not stop.

According to the Polk County Sheriff's Office, the investigation started March 19 after a Department of Children and Families investigator contacted deputies regarding the baby, who had been transported by air to Tampa General Hospital to receive treatment for localized bleeding throughout her brain.

The investigator told deputies that the baby was seen by TGH's medical staff on March 19, and that a CT scan determined that some of the bleeding in the baby's brain was old and some of it was new. They said they also found a right temporal fracture to the baby's skill, and that she had suffered six fractures on the left side of her ribs.

The doctor said the injuries were consistent with Shaken Baby Syndrome, deputies said.

Detectives said they learned the baby girl had two primary caregivers: Gaskins and 21-year-old Mary James, who live in the same home. Gaskins, who stayed at home during the day, was the primary caregiver, while James was at work.

The two told deputies they took the baby to the Night Owl clinic in Winter Haven on March 18 because she was pale and appeared to be not feeling well. Gaskins said the baby hadn't seemed well for about a week, deputies said.

The doctor at the clinic noticed swelling on the baby's head, and told the pair to go to Lakeland Regional Health. The following day, the baby was sent to Tampa General Hospital.

Both Gaskins and James told deputies they didn't know why the baby was sick, and they denied knowing how she was injured. However, deputies said that on March 20, Gaskins told deputies he unintentionally hit the baby's head on the crib when he was putting her down, and that he also dropped his cell phone on her head.

On Monday, detectives interviewed Gaskins again, which is when they say he admitted to becoming frustrated with the baby because she was crying and she wouldn't stop. Gaskins said he picked up the baby around her stomach with both hands and shook her, deputies said.

Deputies said Gaskins admitted to doing this on Feb. 28 and something during the week of March 9.

The baby is expected to be released Tuesday from Tampa General Hospital into James' care. Detectives said they don't think James had anything to do with the abuse and that she was cooperative during the investigation.

The baby's current condition is good, but officials say it's too early to tell if she will suffer developmental delays from the injuries she received. The baby is expected to receive further testing and follow-up medical care.

Officials said that neither Gaskins nor James has a prior history with DCF, and that neither has a criminal history.

Gaskins is facing two charges of aggravated child abuse. He is currently being held at the Polk County Jail without bond.
